So What Are You Wondering About?

We are asked by the kind folks at adoption.com to write on a variety of topics, many of which should be hands-on, "how to" articles about adoption. I have tried to touch base on some of the more basic aspects of international adoption, and, specifically, Kazakhstan adoption.

You might be suprised to know this blog got over 8,000 hits last month. So apparently someone is reading this! What I would like to know from anyone reading these posts is if there is anything specific you would like answered.

I typically do a little research beyond my own personal knowledge on the "how to" posts, and I try to include links to relevant websites. When I visit the adoption.com forum, there still seem to be many people asking very basic questions like 1) do both parents have to travel (yes), 2) can you get a referral (not officially, although many agencies do this), and 3) what is an LOI, the MFA, DOE, etc.

I sometimes take it for granted that my audience already knows quite a bit about adoption, but really, I am guessing that many readers may be first time adoptive parents. There are so many different areas to discuss really, that it is sometimes difficult for me to narrow it down to just one topic. Once I start, the post seems to just keep growing...

So, if there is something specific you would like to know about, please, please post a note below, and I will try my best to find an answer for you, or at least head you in the right direction. If it's a topic other could benefit from, I will probably write the response as a post. This goes beyond the "how to" posts, it includes adoptive parents, research, resources, finances, re-adoption, etc. Anything is fair game (well, within reason). So please, ask away!

My husband and I just found out that we won't be able to adopt from Kaz because of my health condition (diabetes). The meds I am taking encourage fertility (I guess that's the way to put it, they're not FOR fertility per se, but people who have taken this have gotten pregnant easier) anyway, with that said, the Kaz government said that if I were to show up seeking to adopt and was pregnant (not likely, but since it's not likely, we are also not taking precautions against it either) the Kaz government would not allow us to adopt. [Our agency had to take this question to the officials in Kaz in the past couple months and we just got this answer]

So I guess the question out of this (and precaution for others) would be are there any other health considerations of which people need to be aware that might cause problems within the realm of international adoption -- whether from Kaz or elsewhere?

Awesome question, and deserving of its own post, which I just wrote. Basically, you will find China and Korea most stringent on health. Weight (30% over normal) is an issue with Korea. China looks at serious illness such as cancer, as well as overall health. If one parent is seriously ill or significantly overweight, it appears China wants the other parent to be healthy. In most other countries, if USCIS approved you, and your SW, you will be OK. I am so sorry this happened to you!

I am wondering why so many posts state to choose an agency that is connected to a lot of different regions (Baby Houses?) than I can not find a list of which agencies are in what regions in Kazakhstan. I want to know how you can switch adoption countries depending on who gives the soonest or best match referal? I want to know who has a list of all the baby houses in a country. Yes I fell in love with kids on a photolist and yes I know they could be adopted by now. A sibling boy 5 and sister 3. But could'nt I send out their picture to the baby houses and ask about them? Then deceide to choose the agency they are with? How old is considered an older child adoption? Babies are less than two, toddlers 2-4? Who keeps track of the " most requested " age or gender or sibling group? Is the waiting list longer for the 3-5 age range dependent on the agency? Who keeps track of the agencies that refer the healthiest children? Would'nt www.orpahandr.com know which agency refers the healthiest kids? Where could I find out? My heart wants to find my kids. Thank you.

Many great questions, I will post right now. Basically, your questions break down into agency selection, adoption research, and adoption statistics. See my post today and I will do my best.
