It seems as though a change has been on the horizon for a number of months in regard to adoption from Kazakhstan. Yet, nothing has surfaced about that prospective change being a reality. For those of you who are just joining us, Kazakhstan is in the process of ratifying itself to Hague Convention statutes. This ratification is not an easy process- so a timeframe is not possible but there have been many releases stating that this country is going to re-open in the near future. These releases gave us hope.
I do believe that Kazakhstan is close to re-opening its adoption program with the United States. In order to re-open though, it has to reach a suitable agreement with both parties. With the difference in cultures and expectations- this is not always easy to accomplish. There are many prospective adoption parents who are waiting for movement from this country’s adoption program. If you are waiting, consider researching adoption from this country. There are many good books that have been written on adoption. The internet also offers a vast number of options for research and familiarizing yourself. You are on the right track by stopping here at adoption.com. You can also pursue blogs of those who have adopted from Kazakhstan, join online communities dedicated to adoption from this country and follow adoptions that are being completed from other countries internationally. This would be a fun way to immerse yourself in adoption and learn valuable information as well.
Adoption from Kazakhstan is available in some countries but the adoption relationship with the United States is not open. Kazakhstan and the United States are working on an agreement through the Hague Convention that would be acceptable to both parties. This will be happening in the near future. If you are waiting for it to occur- hang in there.

Angie, you say that “adoption from Kazakhstan is available in some countries”. Please could you tell me which countries. I had understood that all intercountry adoption had stopped, pending the introduction of the new Family Law and Hague Convention procedures (even for those applications, submitted before the May 2010 deadline).

I am not certain which countries have active relationships but I would venture to say that it is probably the European countries, Germany, France and perhaps Canada. I am just guessing here. I know that each country must go through the process with Kazakhstan itself and the United States is attempting to reach an agreement at this time. Thanks for the website.
