The movie BORAT has hit the local movie theatres but has also “hit” the adoptive community by storm. And it is not so much the movie but the ignorance of the people having interviews about the movie or speaking about adoption from Kazakhstan.
An article in the Boston Herald has been circulating the various adoption boards: http://news.bostonherald.com/localRegional/view.bg?articleid=165605 in support of adoption from Kazakhstan.
While I know most children have NOT nor will ever see the movie, they are exposed to the various “talks” that are being done on VH1 and interviews around the country and these are affecting our children. The VH1 talk saying Kazakhstan is a country you’d NEVER want to adopt from upsets me the most! How a story went from Madonna adopting to that statement is beyond me – I can’t understand how someone who has never adopted let alone never adopted from Kazakhstan makes a statement like that!
I know first hand how this affects us all – when my daughter had to research her birth country in 7th grade and she came home in tears saying she is NOT Albanian because it is a poor and ugly country – it just broke my heart. The information she was able to obtain on Albania wasn’t positive. And try as I might to convince her otherwise – she stood firm by what “she learned”. Although I know a huge amount of our troubles stemmed from the teen years – I think the view of her country at that critical time of her life played a role in her unhealthy behavior.
I am proud of the people who have written VH1 and the made the news with articles or interviews to have our voices heard. I also hope that most people see the movie for what it is “a comedian” doing a movie – that he isn’t a respected reporter doing a documentary on the country. I hope that people question me on what they see – so I can set the record straight. Because as the article in the Boston Herald stated – the woman are BEAUTIFUL – it is like they walked off the pages of a designer magazine when you see them. The mountains surrounding the country are breath taking. All countries – including ours – have their pluses and their minuses – things we could laugh at that are ridiculous. But to make a statement that you’d NEVER want to adopt from a country because of what you’ve heard or saw in a movie – is ridiculous and should receive letters of complaints from people who HAVE adopted and KNOW first hand how wonderful the people and children are.
