We all talk about the difference in adoptive parenting versus parenting a child born in to a family. However, I haven’t heard much talk about adoptive parents in the “pregnancy” stage of adoption. It was nice for me to see an adoptive mom create a line of products called not showing http://www.notshowing.com/
I remember after years of infertility treatment and heart break – the plans for our upcoming adoption made me want to shout from the roof tops that we would become parents. It was a happy time – but along with the happiness came the various worries that many first time parent have – will we be okay financially, will I know “how” to parent the right way, will I be a good mom, etc.
But when I think back – there wasn’t a way to say we were expecting with adoption – no outward body signs. We were excited and it would of been great to have had the opportunity to wear a not showing shirt to express our joy.
The road to our children is often very different – but I think the emotions can be similar in some ways and totally different in others.
When is a baby shower thrown for an adoption? Travel to another country is a first for many adoptive parents and adds another level of concern and questions. Mounds of paperwork make it different. Ways to finance the process is an added concern.
It is nice to have the not showing product line to have us express our upcoming adoption with others – a way to make it similar – but yet different – but bottom line – it allows adoptive parents to express their joy and I’m all for that!
